The difference between electrical cables and optical cables

2013-06-01

What is cable? Cable is a general term for optical cables, electrical cables and other items. Cables have many uses, mainly used for control installation, connecting equipment, transmitting electricity and other multiple functions. They are common and indispensable in daily life. Since cables are charged, they need to be installed with special care.

The difference between cables and optical cables

1. There is a difference in material. Cables use metal materials (mostly copper and aluminum) as conductors; optical cables use glass fibers as conductors.

2. There is a difference in the transmission signals. Cables transmit electrical signals. Optical cables transmit non-signals.

3. There is a difference in the scope of application. Cables are now mostly used for energy transmission and low-end data information transmission (such as telephone). Optical cables are mostly used for data transmission.

Difference between optical fiber and optical cable

Optical fiber is a thin and soft medium for transmitting light beams. Optical fiber cable consists of a bundle of fibers, referred to as optical cable. Optical fiber is the core part of the optical cable, and the optical fiber is protected by some components and their attached protective layers to form an optical cable.

Optical fiber is usually made of quartz glass, a double-layer concentric cylinder with a very small cross-sectional area, also called the fiber core, which is fragile and easy to crack. (Source: Dongguan HX Fiber Technology Co., Ltd)
