Introduction to layer-stranded flame retardant optical cable

2011-07-01

Layer-stranded flame-retardant optical cable is a specially designed optical cable that combines a layer-stranded structure with flame-retardant materials to improve the safety and reliability of the optical cable in a fire environment. This type of optical cable is widely used in places with strict requirements on fire resistance, such as data centers, commercial buildings, public buildings, rail transit, ships and aircraft.

Features of layer-twisted structure:

Central strength member: The center of the optical cable usually contains one or more strength members (such as steel wire or aramid fiber) to provide longitudinal strength of the optical cable.

Fiber bundle tube: Around the central strength member, bundle tubes containing optical fibers are twisted and arranged, and each bundle tube is filled with grease to protect the optical fiber from moisture and mechanical damage.

Filling and wrapping: Flame-retardant materials or grease are filled between the bundle tubes to enhance the flame retardancy and waterproofness of the optical cable. There may also be wrapping tape on the outer layer to further enhance the mechanical properties of the optical cable.

Sheath: The outermost layer is a flame-retardant sheath, which is usually made of materials such as low-smoke zero-halogen (LSZH) or flame-retardant polyvinyl chloride (PVC) to ensure that the optical cable will not produce toxic smoke or promote the spread of fire under fire conditions.

Flame retardant performance:

The jacket material and filler of flame retardant optical cables are specially designed to meet the requirements of different fire protection levels, such as:

IEC 60332: The International Electrotechnical Commission's standard for the flame retardant performance of electrical and optical cables in single cable flame spread tests.

UL 1666: The Underwriters Laboratories' standard for the flame retardant performance of cables in shaft flame spread tests, applicable to vertical cable installations.

EN 50399: European standard that specifies the performance requirements of electrical and optical cables under fire conditions.

Application scenarios:

Indoor installation: Layer-twisted flame-retardant optical cables are suitable for indoor environments with high fire safety requirements, such as fiber optic network wiring in data centers, commercial buildings, and public buildings.

Railway transportation: In rail transportation systems, flame-retardant optical cables are used for communication and monitoring systems to ensure the reliability of communication lines and personnel safety in emergency situations.

Shipbuilding and aviation: In the shipbuilding and aviation fields, flame-retardant optical cables are used for internal communication networks to meet stringent fire protection and safety standards.

Layer-twisted flame-retardant optical cables not only provide the high performance required for optical fiber communications by combining advanced structure and material technology, but also ensure safety and reliability in emergency situations such as fires. They are an indispensable part of modern optical fiber network construction. (Source: Dongguan HX Fiber Technology Co., Ltd)
