Is GYTS optical cable flame retardant? What does the model number represent?

2011-02-01

GYTS optical cable ("G" stands for indoor (field) optical cable for communication, "Y" stands for filled structure, "T" stands for jelly filling, and "S" stands for aluminum-polyethylene bonded sheath) is an optical cable widely used in outdoor environments and is designed to withstand harsh weather conditions and physical stress. However, GYTS optical cable itself is not specifically designed to be flame-retardant.

The sheath of GYTS optical cable is composed of aluminum-polyethylene bonded sheath, which provides good moisture resistance and mechanical protection, but the aluminum sheath and polyethylene outer sheath are not flame retardant. In emergency situations such as fire, GYTS optical cable may not be extinguished immediately, and it may produce smoke and toxic gases when burning.

If flame-retardant optical cables are required in specific application scenarios, such as inside buildings or in environments with special requirements for flame-retardant performance, special flame-retardant optical cables should be selected. Flame-retardant optical cables (usually marked as OFNR, OFNP, LSZH, etc.) are made of flame-retardant materials that can slow the spread of flames and reduce the production of smoke and toxic gases when burning, thereby providing higher safety performance.

Therefore, if flame-retardant performance is a necessary requirement in the project, optical cable types that meet flame-retardant standards should be selected instead of GYTS optical cables. When designing and deploying optical cable networks, the type of optical cable should be reasonably selected according to the actual application environment and safety standards to ensure the safety and reliability of the network.  (Source: Dongguan HX Fiber Technology Co., Ltd)
